Today I could spend a lot of time with birding and since the weather was fine as well, I started with a small birding bicycle tour. My first destination was the Riparian Forest near the barrage of Viereth. Noon is perhaps not the best time for observing passerines, but still the most of the hoped for species were showing. So I was able to observe Lesser and Middle Spotted Woodpecker on the same tree! Apart from the Cuckoo any of the riparian species could be seen, highlight was a Golden Oriole...
I´ve planned to write some more site descriptions and today I´ve visited one of these probable new sites. The "Kraiberg" is located north of the small town "Baunach", especially its southern slope is ornithological very interesting. The whole area is a mosaic of fields, hedges, bushes, fruit trees, small gardens and meadows. Because of this diversity you´ll find here a lot of birds. Today I focused on the typical breeders and actually it didn´t take long till I detected the first target...
I was quite excited, when I heard that a Great Grey Shrike had been reported just a few kilometers from my home. So I kept two hours in the evening for visiting the site. Unfortunately thick rain clouds were coming along the valley of the river "Main", just as I wanted to go. Nevertheless I´ve tried. Instead of walking around I stayed in the car and was driving on the farm tracks. However this strategy didn´t proof to be very sucessful, since I could only observe few Skylarks and Black...
It´s now the fourth visit at Gaustadt to see the very interesting mixed singer, at the moment the best theory is a mixed singer of Willow Warbler and Siberian Chiffchaff. Today I wanted to find out, whether the song of the mixed singer had changed. It didn´t take long till I heard the weird mixed song and after a few minutes I could locate the singer in a bush. Like always it had been a normal looking Willow Warbler, but I was quite astonished, when I heard the song of the mixed singer of...
It has taken more than a week for me to get out again for birdwatching. Today I finally managed a trip to the "Großer Wörth". My main target species was the Little Bittern, which has become a regular breeder over the last years. Noon is probably not the best time for observing this species, but I was quite astonished, since it did only take a few minutes on the observation tower to spot one! Unfortunately it remained a bit distant and so the pictures are not the best. Not only the Little...
For two weeks I´ve been in Austria and could observe more than 100 species. In the last days I was already birdwatching here as well. My first destination was the surrounding area of the Porznersee to look after the River Warbler. Unfortunately the "normal" path is at the moment not passable and so I had to take the longer variant. Afterwards I´m confident that this variant does also have its advantages: Apart from several Skylarks, Nightingales and Common Whitethroats I could also spot a...
